Leslie Robertson Toney is a photographer with over a decade of experience. Carnival, native to her home country, Trinidad  and Tobago, has provided a wealth of inspiration for her work. Read more below.

I like to shoot culture however it unfolds be it in a festival, religious observance, your precious event or your family. One of my favorite things to photograph over the years has been Trinidad Carnival, particularly children playing mas and traditional costumes.

My work has been published in the Trinidad Guardian, online in Island Vibes Magazine, and in the Amistad Literary Journal of Howard University. I’ve participated in exhibits in Washington, DC, USA, Trinidad and as part of an international group exhibit, and I’ve done photography of New Orleans Jazz Festival for the Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archives. I believe I have a responsibility to offer one of many alternative stories on the history and heritage of Trinidad & Tobago heritage, which is what you see unfolding on my blog.

In 2011 I was also chosen as a Best of Photography Finalist and my work is published in Photographer’s Forum Best of Photography 2011 catalogue, I chose to not enter in 2012.

Starting in 2012 and continuing my work is part of an international photography exhibition entitled Roots & Wings, a collaborative project by Urbanflo Creative Consultancy and Brighton Photo Fringe starting in Crawley, England, moving on to Barbados, and Martinique, West Indies. I also had work as part of FotoDC’s Cherry Blossom Photo Exhibit in Crystal City, Virginia, USA.

I reside and work in the Washington Metropolitan Area and sometimes in Trinidad and Tobago. When I’m not behind
the camera, I am a mentor, and I work as a psychotherapist in community mental health.

  1. It is such good pleasure to see your work of art. Make me very proud to view along with others a touch of my Trini Carnival in it’s splendor of colors and off course all the other work that you present.

My prayer is that you continue to do what you do, I know this is your way to inspire others just as you inspired me.

    I wish you much success.
